I grew up loving Edward Eager, but somehow I missed this one. After I grew up, I introduced by my daughter to him, creating another fan. The Time Garden brought back all the reasons why I loved hims as a kid and a young mom.

A "reread" from my childhood. I love all of Edward Eager's children's books.
I'm a big Edward Eager fan, and this is my favorite of his. Something about the setting of this book is extra-magical to me. The children spend the summer in a beautiful old house by the sea that has a large garden filled with all different kinds of thyme that can magically transport the kids to various times and places. The plays on words are cute, the Natterjack is a great character, and their adventures are fun...including a trip to visit the March family from Little Women. All-around great book!
I loved Edward Eager books when I was a kid and my nieces love them too. It's hard to get them to read 'old fashioned' books but they love these. They are timeless. I bought a bunch and re-read them before I passed them on. They are still a delight. The magic keeps the kids happy too. Great adventure stories, well written and really enjoyable.
Eliza Ann Roger and Jack go to an old house by the ocean and they meet a Natterjack in a magic garden and they go back in time to Queen Victoria's time. Some very interesting things happen while they are there. I JUST LOVE IT!!!!!!!! I think that every Edward Eager fan should read it. Great for 6 and up!!!
Edward Eager's books are well written, magical and educational. I discovered these books this year, 2012, as a result of my 8 year old son's interest in magic books. pointed me to these and we now own all seven of the series - they are well worth it. Published in the 1950's they remain interesting and imaginative.
Edward Eager continues to entertain decades after his death through his books about ordinary children who experience magic. THE TIME GARDEN was always one of my favorites (oh, okay, I admit it - I like all of Edward Eager's books and can't really pick a favorite). Roger, Ann, Eliza, and Jack encounter time traveling at its finest when they are exiled to spend the summer with old Mrs. Whiton. An interesting note, their mothers were two of the children in HALF MAGIC and MAGIC BY THE LAKE also by Eager. A bank of wild thyme in the garden opens doors to the past, present and future for these four delightful children. If it's imagination you are looking for, look no further. Edward Eager's books are witty and wild and funny. There is a certain degree of sophistication in his style of writing that makes these stories interesting even for the mature reader.
Edward Eager was my favorite author when I was a child. He led me back to the greatest children's fantasy writer of all time, Edith Nesbit Bland. I had only read one book of hers (The Enchanted Castle) and had unfortunately forgotten the title and her name, but then, thanks to Mr. Eager, I discovered all the rest of her works! I am eternally grateful to him for that (he mentions E. Nesbit on purpose in the first book of this series called, "Half-Magic" in order to pay tribute to her influence on his writing and to encourage a new generation of readers to seek the source!) The Time Garden is a fun book and kids will love it! It takes the four children introduced in a previous book (Knight's Castle) and puts them together with a magical creature (the Natterjack) who reminds me of a similar creature in E. Nesbit's books and they time-travel to many places. The book is funny and witty and great reading even for adults. I suggest parents read all of these books outloud to their kids--what a wonderful way to spend time together! The time garden uses different kinds of thyme as the magic ingredient for time-travel, so as a young mother, I created an elaborate herb garden in my yard (containing all types of thyme) in the vague hope that my own four children could explore "time" like these great kids do---but I am still waiting for the Natterjack to show up and teach them the ropes......waiting......still waiting....please enjoy Edward Eager's books. They are all wonderful.
