The Witch Hunter Tale A Midwife Mystery The Midwife Tale Sam Thomas Books
I do like this book a lot, but I write this review to say a little more about novels with a vivid historical setting. At their best, and The Witch-Hunter’s Tale is a worthy example, they lead us into a new culture, which we discover to be uncomfortably different despite the fact that we, and most readers, are its direct descendents. In reading Sam Thomas’s books, we encounter, for example, a quality of religiosity not found even at the extremes of the current religious spectrum. We understand through inference just how foreign to us 17th century beliefs about poverty, justice, gender, and death are. And we bring that awareness back into our daily lives, changing our focus on those issues today, perhaps even giving us new and welcome insights.

The Witch Hunter Tale A Midwife Mystery The Midwife Tale Sam Thomas Books Reviews
I couldn't put this book down. It was suspenseful, full of twists and turns. I had no idea that Sam Thomas wrote two more books along these lines.I bought all three and loved reading them. Can't wait for the next installment!
This is the very best of the three Midwife books. You can actually visualize and smell the cells in the jails. Sam's description of the hangings and the emotion of the people is truly magnificent.
This is one book I could not put down. It was wonderful.
This was a most interesting book about a period in time that I did not know much about at all. I liked the central character a lot and I loved the descriptions of life in that time in England. The author has done a super good job in writing this book in my opinion. If you like unusual situations and characters, you would like this book a lot, in my 'humble opinion'. I look forward to more books by this author.
I love this series. Lady Bridget is my favorite detective and she is an independent 17th century sister! I enjoy the way that Sam Thomas allows Bridget to be a smart, insightful character, but keeps her within the framework of the times. She is mindful of her status in society and conducts herself accordingly, but is definitely more progressive than she lets on. I think this is the best of the series so far, but I'm excited to see where the author takes the characters after this ending...
I really like this series. Although each book stands on its own just fine, the characters change and develop as the series goes on. The setting descriptions and political intrigue are interesting and well developed.
Nephew Joseph has started a witch hunt in York and enlisted Rebecca Hooke to help. This volatile combination soon leads to death and despair. I didn't enjoy the ending but am curious what happens next. Witch hunts were real and scary so this is interesting look at that phenomenon. The godly reformers got a little drunk on power, but what were the motives of the people. Did not anticipate the murderer or the personal developments.
Sam Thomas is one of my favorite authors. This book is a wonderful addition to his Midwife Mystery series. I won't go into a ton of detail about the story itself, but this particular story features a lot of violence provoked by cultural superstitions and religious-political norms of seventeenth-century England. It's very sobering, and there are moments where choosing the lesser evil is necessary for various characters. Thomas's background as a historian has always beautifully complimented his stories, and this book is no exception. I highly recommend all of his written work.
